AIDS is the #1 cause of death amongst the young population in Namibia. On average, HIV prevalence rate in sub-Saharan Africa is 7.4%, while five southern African countries show a prevalence rate of more than 18%. First HIV cases were reported in Namibia in 1986. Since then, the situation has become increasingly worse.

The disease has spread fast and by 1998 more than 53 000 HIV cases have been reported. Because most persons with HIV do not have symptoms, the majority of persons with HIV have not been tested. The total number of HIV infected Namibians is probably two to three times higher.
